The presentation of the LTT activity 6-10 March 2023
MONDAY-12.06.2023
The first day started with the welcome of the participants and the presentation of the school.
After that, the teams introduced themselves, and the project coordinator presented the schedule of activities.
The first activity had the theme "Reduction - the first step of sustainability". A brainstorming was organized starting from the word "reduce". Through this activity, students learned that reducing consumption is a great way to reduce their impact on the environment. Then some statistics on municipal waste were presented and discussed.
Next, a workshop on the carbon footprint was organized. During this time, students and teachers learned about the effect human activity has on the Earth, learned what the carbon footprint is, and understood how human activities affect it. Through free-flowing discussions, they suggested ways in which they can reduce their carbon footprint and help protect the environment. An online carbon footprint calculation application has been shared. All participants should calculate their carbon footprint and share the amount via a screenshot by Friday morning, when an analysis will be done.
The day ended with a meeting to a secondary school in the city of Husi (Anastasie Panu Secondary School), the participants having the opportunity to get to know the Romanian educational system better.

TUESDAY-13.06.2023
The second day started with a hybrid interactive seminar on "Sustainable Agriculture" at the "Ion Ionescu de la Brad" University of Life Sciences in Iași. The host professor explained to them how sustainable agriculture is done, that this is not a set of practices, because what is sustainable in one place may not be in another, and what we are currently doing is it may not be valid for the future. A set of principles of sustainable agriculture and the 3 main objectives (environmental health, economic profitability and social equity) were listed.
The students were informed about the research carried out by the university with the aim of finding the best solutions for an agriculture adapted to climate change and global warming. The participants visited a soil quality research laboratory, being very curious about how soil composition is determined and excited about the water quality determination kit.
Also, an experiment was carried out to bio monitor the quality of the soil, how pollution influences the quality of the grass. The participants met a team of young research students who created meat tagliatelle, now the research team was working on creating an optimal and sustainable packaging.
Then, a guided study case was organized at the Iași Botanical Garden: "The influence of climate change on plants". Students had the opportunity to learn how climate change can affect plant life and talk about different factors that change ecosystems.

WEDNESDAY-14.06.2023
The third day started with a case study on the farm of Mr. Vasile Moraru, a local producer of organic vegetables ("From the farm to the fork"). The participants had the opportunity to see how different varieties of vegetables are grown and how these vegetables are sold in the local market without packaging, directly to consumers. That's how they realized that by buying from a local producer, they could reduce their carbon footprint.
The students were delighted to pick cucumbers and tomatoes, they even made a salad, appreciating the quality of the vegetables.
The day continued with a creative workshop with the theme "Waste can be art!". Working in mixed groups, the students created different objects (carpets, ropes, paper flowers and other decorative objects).
In the afternoon, the students discussed the theme of this year's World Environment Day: "Beat Plastic Pollution", were divided into mixed groups to find ways to reduce plastic and then worked together and created a joint leaflet in Canva on ways to reduce plastic. The leaflet was made in Romanian and English because the next day it was distributed to the locals in the city of Husi.

THURSDAY-15.06.2023
The fourth day began with a visit to the water purification and treatment stations in the city of Husi. Mr. Dorin Prepelita, a chemical engineer from the water treatment station, presented to the students and teachers what water pollution is and what are the steps that the employees of the station take to clean it. The engineer explained to the participants how all waste water is collected through the sewage network, how it is purified and the sludge treated, in compliance with national and European quality standards.
Also, through a continuous dialogue with the participants, they talked about how water pollution can be reduced. The students actively participated in determining the degree of water pollution in the station's laboratory.
Then, we went to the water treatment station, where Mr. Petru Dacu explained to us how water from the Prut river is collected in the water tower and subjected to several treatment cycles.
Then, the director of the Vaslui Environmental Protection Agency, Ms Mihaela Budianu, doctor of engineering, presented the main actions of the European Union in order to reduce consumption, spoke about the European Green Pact and the Kyoto convention. She explained the carbon footprint of a bakery product, the participants being shocked by how much carbon dioxide is consumed for the production of a package of biscuits.
The fourth day ended with a hike to the Dobrina Forest. The movement was made on foot, but also on bicycles. On the way, the students and teachers distributed to the locals the leaflet they created on the third day, discussing with them the objectives of the project and the activities carried out. This activity was designed to highlight how daily transportation increases our carbon footprint and how we can adopt a sustainable mode of transportation. During the hike to the forest, the participants carried out greening activities.

FRIDAY-16.06.2023
The last day started with a carbon footprint analysis. The average carbon footprint for the 2 participating countries was calculated.
Thus, it was found that the average footprint in Romania is 9.8 tons per year, and that of Turkey is 9.5.
With the support of the manager of green spaces within the municipality of Husi, engineer Teodor Rotaru, the participants planted flowers and trees in the school yard, discussing the importance of trees in reducing the amount of CO2.
The students' knowledge was evaluated through an online game and an acrostic.
Also, the degree of satisfaction of the participants regarding the organization of this week's activities was evaluated.
After the evaluation, certificates of participation were awarded.
